Newellcreations founder 'Gideon' Dave Newell, in his work as an animator for web edu-tainment company iKnowthat.com, contributed to the following games and activities by designing with Macromedia Flash and Director. Click on thumbnails for full-size images. Operation Optics is a game that teaches the science of light and optics by giving the player a chance to defend the Earth from alien Ant invaders. Animated loading screen. In some levels, the player rotates a mirror in order to burn parachuting invader ants before they can land and carry off the buildings. In other levels, the player moves the focal point of a light refraction. In other levels the player slides a convex lens to disperse enemy fire harmlessly onto the igloos below. Difficulty comes with added simultaneous threats. In other levels, the player mirror rotates to direct appropriately-colored light at invaders. Orange invaders are vulnerable to orange light and so forth. The Stickerbook activity allows users to create multi-page stories using provided artwork and then save and share them online. A Stickerbook begins with a background which users can then drag and drop premade artwork -- called stickers -- onto. Backgrounds are 3D and stickers scale as they are dragged throughout the scene to reflect actual sizing. Stickers are categorized in the Stickers pane. The Changes pane lets users manually adjust placed stickers. The Actions pane lets users access the built-in animations and sounds for each sticker. The Words pane lets users enter text which can be sized and colored. Text can also be on a colored rectangle background. Paint is an activity that teaches art history terms and techniques while allowing users to create, save, and share their own artwork online. During Paint's loadup sequence, this help screen familiarizes the user with the interface. The Art Period dialog screen allows the user to chose preset tool-canvas combinations. Various brushstrokes. The Brush dialog screen allows the user to switch tools for a different effect. The Palette dialog screen allows the user to switch color palettes similar to those used throughout art history. The Reveal Photo dialog screen allows the user to choose a photo which will be revealed under each brushstroke. The Texture dialog screen allows the user to choose a texture that effects their brushstrokes. The Save dialog screen. The various Language activities (like the Word Match Game pictured) draw on a library of thousands of animated words. When a correct answer is given, the words reveal their built-in animation. Correctly finishing a set of words in a language activity displays achievment certificates which can be saved and shared. |
